Toddler Boy Fall Outfit: Retro Corduroy Look

The corduroy overalls came out of the bin on the first genuinely cold Saturday, the one where you go outside in a t-shirt to move the trash cans and come right back in. I had forgotten they were even in there. They were folded under a stack of summer shorts with the straps still adjusted to where they were last October, which tells you how carefully I put things away.
My son saw them and immediately sat down on the floor to get his feet in, which never happens with pants. That is most of why I keep buying overalls. There is no waistband argument, no tag on the back of his neck, no negotiating about which side is the front. He steps in, I do the two buttons at the shoulders, and we are finished. On a morning where I am also making toast and finding one specific missing sock, that difference matters more than it should.
The other part is that they photograph like I planned something. I did not plan anything. He wore these with a striped turtleneck to the apple orchard, and my mom asked where I found the outfit like it was a whole coordinated thing. It is three pieces, and two of them were already in the drawer.
He wore them four days that week. The knees got orchard dirt on them and washed out fine, which is the other reason they keep coming back every fall.

Common questions
- What can I layer under corduroy overalls for a toddler boy?
- A striped or solid long-sleeve turtleneck is the easiest option in fall, and a plain tee works on warmer days. When it gets colder, a thin thermal top under the overalls adds warmth without bulk at the straps.
- Are corduroy overalls warm enough for fall weather?
- For most fall days, yes. Corduroy is heavier than cotton twill and blocks wind reasonably well. Once it drops below the mid-forties, add a long-sleeve layer underneath and a jacket over the top.
- What size overalls should I buy for a toddler?
- Order his usual size or one size up if you want to layer underneath. Adjustable straps buy you a lot of room, so a slightly big pair usually lasts two seasons with the straps shortened the first year.
If you only add one thing to his fall drawer this year, make it the overalls. They cover the hard part of getting a toddler dressed and they still look like you tried.
