We've gone through two puffer vests this year that he refused to zip past his chest, so I wasn't expecting much from a new jacket. The quilted bomber changed that. The attached hood is soft sweatshirt material instead of stiff shell fabric, so it doesn't bug him at the neck, and the zipper glides enough that he'll actually pull it up himself most mornings.

It's warm without being bulky, which matters once he's climbing into his car seat five times a day, and it hits at the hip instead of down at his knees like his old coat did.

Common questions

Is a quilted bomber jacket warm enough for toddlers in fall?
A midweight quilted bomber with a fleece lining works well through most of fall down into the 40s. Layer a long sleeve tee underneath once temperatures drop further, and it holds up into early winter in milder climates.
What's the benefit of an attached hood over a separate hat?
An attached hood stays put better than a hat a toddler can pull off, and a soft sweatshirt-style hood doesn't add the bulk or stiffness of a shell-fabric one, so it's comfortable enough that he'll actually leave it up.
How do you get a toddler to zip up their own jacket?
A smooth, higher-quality zipper with a zipper guard at the top makes the biggest difference. Once it doesn't catch or pinch, most toddlers pick up the motion fast and want to do it themselves.

Four pieces, one jacket he'll actually keep zipped, and a fast enough routine that we're not late to daycare over it. This is the one going into regular rotation once it cools off for good.
