I have worn some version of this outfit at least three times this week and nobody has called me out yet. A plaid shacket over a plain tank does most of the work, it covers the days I didn't have time to actually get dressed. Wide leg jeans, a pair of boots, and I'm out the door.

  1. Woman wearing an oversized camel and cream plaid flannel shacket over a white top.

    AUTOMET Plaid Flannel Shacket

The piece that makes the whole outfit look intentional, even thrown over a plain tank.

    $19.99–$29.99Shop it
  2. Light wash high waisted wide leg jeans on a model.

    Levi's Cinch Baggy Jeans

A light wash wide leg that's actually comfortable enough to wear all day, not just for photos.

    $48–$85Shop it
  3. White ribbed scoop neck tank top worn with jeans.

    GEMBERA Ribbed Tank

The layering piece underneath, keeps things from getting bulky under the shacket.

    $15–$20Shop it
  4. Tan suede pointed toe Chelsea bootie with a stacked wooden heel.

    Coutgo Chelsea Booties

A pointed toe and stacked heel that tucks cleanly under a cuffed wide leg jean instead of getting lost in it.

    $44.99Shop it

Four pieces, and I already owned none of them a week ago. Worth having in rotation through the rest of fall.

Common questions

What is a shacket?
A shirt-jacket hybrid, heavier than a button-down but lighter than a coat, so it works as a layer from cool mornings into warmer afternoons.
Can you wear a shacket with wide leg jeans?
Yes, a pointed toe boot with some heel keeps the proportions balanced so the wide leg doesn't overwhelm the look.
What do you wear under a shacket?
A simple ribbed tank or fitted long sleeve keeps the layering from getting bulky and lets the shacket be the statement piece.
