I used to tell myself I'd read more once things calmed down, which is a nice way of saying never. What actually got me reading again wasn't more free time, it was making the fifteen minutes I do have easier to use. A light I don't have to get up to turn off, a blanket that's already on the chair, a mug that's still warm by chapter two, and a stand so I'm not holding a paperback open with one hand while doing something else with the other.

  3. Brown BrüMate insulated coffee mug with a hinged lid and handle.

None of this made me a faster reader. It just made it a lot easier to actually pick the book up instead of scrolling for twenty minutes and calling it rest.

Common questions

What actually helps you read more as a busy mom?
Removing the small friction, a light already clipped on, a blanket already within reach, so picking up a book takes less effort than scrolling your phone instead.
Is a book light worth it over just using a lamp?
If you're reading after someone else is asleep, yes, it keeps the light contained to the page instead of lighting up the whole room.
What's a book stand actually for?
Hands-free reading, it holds the book open at an angle so you can eat, drink, or just rest your hands while you read instead of holding the pages open yourself.
